ELA Students will understand r-controlled vowels: /er/ ir, ur, er They will continue writing their study of Biographies (Helen Keller, Abraham Lincoln). They will understand Facts and Details when reading informational text. Math Operations and Algebraic Thinking 2.OA 3.8–3.9 2.OA.A.1 Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. Social Studies The students will continue to learn and understand the US map including the continent of North America, the location of the United States on the map, as well as the location of North Carolina. Science The students will finish the Properties of Matter Unit this week and part of next week. They will continue designing and constructing a unit that will keep an "ice pop" cool. They are learning about insulators and conductors and how to use them for an intended purpose. Lysol and Lysol Neutra Air donations With cold and flu season underway, we are in need of Lysol spray as well as Lysol Neutra Air spray in order to keep a healthy, germ free classroom. Each afternoon after the students leave for the day, I spray and wipe the desks, pencils, community supplies, and various areas in the classroom. Your donations of these supplies are appreciated! Due to last week being a short week for us (3 days), we reviewed all ELA concepts from Unit 1. On Friday we completed the Unit1 Benchmark Test. This week we are back on track and ready to learn and understand contractions, author's purpose, and elements of a biography. We will continue to explore Number Concepts including different ways to show the value of numbers to 1000. Our Field Trip was absolutely AMAZING! The weather was perfect and so was the student's behavior. We had several fantastic volunteers who looked after the students and made sure that they were learning, exploring, having fun, and SAFE! A HUGE Thank You to you all!!! Early Release this Friday, Oct. 21st ! Parent Teacher Conferences I will have some time on Friday October 21st between 2:15-3:30 if you would like to come in for a brief 10-15 conference. Please email me if you are interested. Students will test a variety of materials and classify the material either as good or poor at conducting heat. This project is an inquiry experience. Students will gain understanding of heat conduction and insulation at the conclusion of the assignment. Social Studies Students will explore “the World Around Us”. They will learn how to identify places on the map including The United States and North Carolina. ELA

This week the students will focus on Predicting Outcomes when reading a story. Their writing will continue to focus on main idea and supporting details. In phonics, the focus will be controlled or, ar, and ore. MATH Skill: 2.NBT.A.1 Understanding that 3 digit numbers and each digit’s value within that number. The focus will be on the Place Value chart, Drawing Quick pictures, and Venn Diagrams. Social Studies We will continue to learn about the 3 branches of government. Last week, the students were interested in learning about the legislative branch of government and the judicial branch ( Supreme Court Justices)! Science/PLTW We are continuing the Properties of Matter unit with a focus on color and texture. Thank you for submitting your Scholastic orders!
